A total of three and possibly four Benz participated in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race driven by George Robertson, Eddie Hearne, Franz Heim and David Bruce-Brown.

From the Noel Gish Collection: Postcards of the Vanderbilt Cup Races & Long Island Motor Parkway
Noel Gish has a collection of Long Island postcards which he used to help teach Long Island history to his classes at Hauppauge High School. Then & Now: Potential Nassau Historical Markers on the Motor Parkway Trail
Nassau County is currently developing a master plan for a continuous multi-use Motor Parkway Trail. Part of the plan calls for the placement of markers "at the location of historical remnants and will serve as a way to educate the public on the history of the corridor as the original Long Island Motor Parkway..". These are my recommendations for 21 historic markers:

Then & Now: The Massapequa Lodge
Continuing our "Then and Now" series, this photo captured Old 16, the eventual winner of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, climbing the Long Island Motor Prarkway bridge over Massapequa-Hicksville Road. To the right is the Massapqua Lodge, one of the three John Russell Pope-designed toll lodges opened in 1908.

Was This Building The Prototype for the LIMP Toll Lodges?
The first six toll lodges for the Long Island Motor Parkway were designed by the prominent architect John Russell Pope from 1908 to 1911. Prior to receiving this commssion from William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., Pope worked on various Long Island estates and properties including the gatehouse for Willie K's Deepdale estate. One of Pope's most important early commission's was the William L. One of the myths of the Long Island Motor Parkway’s history was that there were 12 lodges designed by prominent architect John Russell Pope and built to collect tolls and provide housing for the toll-takers and their families. The answer to the question of the number of toll lodges on the Motor Parkway is not as easy as you may think.
